JC: February 2023

This study compared Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) with wide local excision (WLE) for the treatment of extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD). MMS demonstrated lower recurrence rates than WLE while preserving more tissue, supporting its role as a preferred surgical approach for this challenging condition.

Take-Home Messages

  • Mohs surgery offers superior margin control and lower recurrence rates compared to WLE for EMPD.
  • Given the subclinical spread typical of EMPD, complete margin assessment with MMS is particularly advantageous.
