Open AccessJC: October 2023

This study analyzed survival outcomes and prognostic factors for dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) in a large cohort. The findings confirmed that DFSP has an excellent prognosis with appropriate surgical management, and identified tumor thickness and fibrosarcomatous transformation as key adverse prognostic factors.

Take-Home Messages

  • DFSP has an excellent overall prognosis when treated with margin-controlled surgery such as Mohs, but fibrosarcomatous variants carry higher risk.
  • Tumor thickness and histologic subtype should guide the intensity of follow-up surveillance after DFSP treatment.

Abstract

Limited information is available regarding survival outcomes and risk factors of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP). To investigate the clinicopathologic characteristics and survival outcomes of DFSP. The study cohort (7,567 patients) was selected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (2000-2018). Demographic and clinicopathologic variables, survival outcomes, and prognostic factors were analyzed. A total of 5,640 (74.53%) and 1,927 (25.47%) tumors were located in t...
