This JAAD study evaluated the efficacy of topical 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) for the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma in situ. The data demonstrated that 5-FU can achieve meaningful clinical and histologic clearance of SCCis, supporting its role as a non-surgical treatment option for select patients.

Topical 5-FU is an effective non-surgical treatment option for SCC in situ in appropriately selected patients.

Non-surgical management of SCCis with 5-FU may be preferred in patients who are poor surgical candidates or have multiple lesions.
