JC: November 2025

This study demonstrated that Mohs micrographic surgery for Merkel cell carcinoma achieves lower local recurrence rates compared to alternative surgical approaches. The complete peripheral and deep margin assessment inherent to Mohs provides a significant oncologic advantage for this aggressive neuroendocrine tumor.

Take-Home Messages

  • Mohs surgery for MCC significantly reduces local recurrence risk through complete circumferential margin assessment.
  • MMS should be considered as a primary surgical option for MCC, particularly for tumors in anatomically sensitive areas.
