This study evaluated the chemoprophylactic effect of PD-1/PD-L1 immune checkpoint inhibitors on the development of new keratinocyte cancers (BCC and SCC) in patients receiving immunotherapy for other malignancies. The findings suggested a potential protective effect against new keratinocyte cancer formation during checkpoint inhibitor treatment.

Take-Home Messages

  • PD-1/PD-L1 checkpoint inhibitors may have a chemopreventive effect on keratinocyte cancer development in treated patients.
  • This immune surveillance enhancement could represent a secondary benefit of checkpoint inhibitor therapy in patients at high risk for skin cancer.
